Duct cleaning is the process of removing the dirt from your home or office air ducts. The only accepted method of duct cleaning is "Source Removal".
This method involves removing the dirt, not "encapsulating" it in the duct. A proper job of duct cleaning will take 2 to 4 hours to complete and will involve cleaning all ducts not just the main trunk lines or just the "return" air ducts.
In addition, the furnace blower and air conditioning coil should be inspected and cleaned if needed. This will add to the time and cost of your duct cleaning but is well worth the additional cost if you have allergies.
As a homeowner you should expect to pay $350 to $500 for this service depending on the size of your duct system. Pricing in commercial buildings varies and is more often quoted on a basis of time and quantity of ductwork needing cleaning.
